Spring is here and so is National Safe Digging Month. Diggers Hotline encourages all excavators and homeowners to always call before digging.
With the snow melted and the ground ready for planting, anxious Wisconsin homeowners are gearing up to start outdoor digging projects. Before you reach for that shovel to start digging, remember to dial 811 to reach Diggers Hotline to ensure that your buried utility lines are marked.
Diggers Hotline, along with the rest of the Common Ground Alliance, recognizes April as National Safe Digging Month. Our land is made up of a complex underground infrastructure of pipelines, wires and cables. Striking an underground utility line while digging can cause harm to you or those around you, disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, and potentially result in fines and repair costs.
Filing a free request with Diggers Hotline by either dialing 811 or (800) 242-8511 or online at www.DiggersHotline.com is required by state law before every digging project. Projects such as planting trees or shrubs, building a deck or installing a rural mailbox all require contacting Diggers Hotline three working days before beginning the project.
Failure to call before digging results in more than 200,000 unintentional hits annually across the nation. Don’t become part of the statistic – make sure to call!
Diggers Hotline is Wisconsin's one-call center. Anyone in the state who is digging, excavating or disturbing the soil is required by law to contact Diggers Hotline at least three working days before beginning work.
