April 2023 Proclaimed Safe Digging Month

April 03, 2023

April has been proclaimed Safe Digging Month in Wisconsin by Gov. Tony Evers.

Safe Digging Month is a good reminder for Wisconsin residents to always call contact Diggers Hotline three

working days before any digging project. Anyone digging in the state, no matter how deep and no matter how small the project, are required by law to contact Diggers Hotline, either online or by dialing 811.

Diggers Hotline is a free service which notifies utilities to send technicians to the digging site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with flags, paint or both. Nationally, every nine minutes an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without first calling 811.

Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, requires contacting Diggers Hotline. Installing a mailbox, building a deck and planting a tree or garden are all examples of digging projects that should only begin after calling Diggers Hotline by dialing 811.
