When Diggers Hotline first started, a handful of operators took locate requests manually. Now a team of customer service representatives takes locate requests 24/7 either from the phone or from one of the online portals. In fact, over 68% of 2023 locate requests were filed online.

Homeowners, landscapers, and professional excavators are all required by law to contact Diggers Hotline, either online or by dialing 811, at least three business days prior to digging. After submitting a locate request, Diggers Hotline notifies the appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent out by the utilities to the requested dig site to mark the approximate locations of underground lines with spray paint or flags.
